How does writing intrigue you? When I write I feel as though I can do anything, be anyone and it makes me happy. I love nothing more than exploring worlds and characters of my own or someone else's imagining.
Why are you interested in Dream Poet?: It can become a place where you can post your works and have others who are interested in similar ideas to critique your works. It is always helpful to be given advice.

(This is the prologue to my short story series 'Pull of the Tide' which I wrote for my Year 12 Extension English course)

As the tide pulls out into that wide blue expanse one comes to wonder what the rolling, rippling current is taking on its journey. Those white washing, billowing waves reach the sandy shore for a quick rest before pulling away, as if gently caressing the land before having to leave; like a forbidden kiss.

So as the cleansing water says goodbye to the sand what kind of secrets, memories and dreams is it taking away? Can they be relived? Can they resurface? Can the pull of the tide bring you back or help you through whatever is to come? Only the inconstant moon can decide for you...

Name: Stephanie, Stephy, Steph, whatever you come up with

Genre(s) you write in (poetry/screenwriting/fiction
/songwriting, etc: poetry, fiction, possible song writing but I have not entirely explored that genre as of yet

How does writing intrigue you? I have a very active imagination and there are times when my imagination comes up with something and if I don't record it on paper/on my computer right then it would be lost forever...and I would rather not lose it. I would much rather share it with others who would appreciate it. I have always been drawn to writing, even at a young age in elementary school when we had to make up a story mine would always exceed the expectations of the teacher. Everyone(including myself) always thought I would become a writer, but as I grew older I realized I would rather teach and get young children to be as passionate about reading and writing as I was.

Why are you interested in Dream Poet?: I love the idea of being able to collaborate with other writers with the same passion as myself. I don't have too many people that will give me an honest critique on something, with this resource I could have that and provide that to someone else.

Piece and/or link: This is an excerpt from my most recent work-in-progress. Male POV.

I woke up on Saturday around 2p.m. after having stayed up most of the night reading Twilight. I was almost done with it, pretty easy read. The plot is complex in its simplicity. I had fallen asleep with the book open on my chest, only the epilogue left to read. While reading last night I noticed a few details that triggered my curiosity for why the girls, especially Amy, were acting strange. I pushed the details to the back of my mind so I couldn’t be distracted from reading but now as I sifted my conscious thoughts from my lingering dreams the curiosity began to form again. I rubbed my eyes and read the epilogue quickly before getting out of bed. As I stretched and stood up, I let my mind wander. I don’t know if I’d ever admit to reading it in public, but Twilight was a good book. One of the details I had been suppressing suddenly became the forefront of my thoughts. I have the same name as one of the characters. That was kind of cool I thought. Most people know me as Carl because when I was younger I got teased for having a “funny name” and since I was probably the first kid to have the name Carlisle in at least a hundred years, I shortened it to reduce the likelihood of having to give up my lunch anymore. I doubt the girls would go ga-ga over a name. I meandered to the kitchen and saw a note on the table:

Your father and I went out for the day. We’ll bring back dinner around 6.
Love Mom.

I grabbed some pop-tarts from the counter and headed back to my room. I sat on my bed and turned the TV on. As I ate and channel surfed, more of the details started interjecting themselves. Bella is in love with Edward, her description of him reminded me of someone but I can’t remember who. Look over at my closet and back, but I have to do a double take in the mirror on my door. Edward’s traits flood my thoughts. Untidy reddish brown hair, golden eyes, tall, lanky but muscular, pale, seventeen. I shook my head in disbelief. The description was dead on, except my eyes are hazel but it’s close enough. That’s why all of the girls giggle and blush, they see me as Edward. What about Amy…she said she’s read the book three times already. Does she just want to hang out because I resemble a character in a book? That has to be it. We’ve known each other for so long and she just happened to want to hang out after she read Twilight. I should have seen it coming.

Genre(s) you write in (poetry/screenwriting/fiction/songwriting, etc: poetry, fiction, a couple songs in the past but not much happened with them (and occasionally i just babble lyrics when i think), and writing out daydreams i've had of things in my life happening certain ways (i guess that's realistic fiction)

How does writing intrigue you? when i write i can get out whatever i'm feeling, and it helps me escape reality for a while. whenever i have a vivid dream or daydream, i have to write it out because otherwise i'll lose the idea. i love reading of the other lives and worlds that writers have imagined, and that also helps me escape.

Why are you interested in Dream Poet?: i love writing but am lacking a much motivation these days, and i feel like becoming a dream poet would really push me forward in my writing - i have a couple storylines running through my mind/jotted down in shorthand and i just can't get myself to write them out. i feel like this community could really help us better our writing and to get ourselves out into the world of writing, and give each other advice, motivation and support to do so.

Piece and/or link: here's the URL to the first chapter of a story i'm writing, and the second is also posted on my lj. (i couldn't figure out how to make it a link, sorry.)

How does writing intrigue you?: It helps me to escape all the little nasty things that happen in life. Lots of bad things have happened around me in the past two years and I see writing as a very helpful outlet.
Why are you interested in Dream Poet?: Because I would enjoy a place to have fun with writing and be around people who share my passion...I would not enjoy a place where all people do is yell at each other and say things like "never write again"
Piece and/or link:
Reality had been so skewed within the course of the past 24 hours that I wasn’t completely sure if I was dreaming or not. I couldn’t see around me that well, all I knew was it was pitch black and I was freezing. My bare feet were planted firmly on the hard earth as I attempted to concentrate on the silence around me.

Silence was typically defined as being a space devoid of any noise. In reality, though, a space which was silent could very well be deafening. If one stands in silence for too long the lack of noise begins to create a sort of buzzing sound in the mind. One that starts out as just a simple hum but quickly escalates to a maddening roar equal to that of a jet engine. The roar is essentially the sound of all the remnants of any noise being drained from the space. It’s like when the plug is pulled on a bathtub and the last drags of water are whipped into a tight whirl and are dragged down the drain. Or when the contents of a plastic bag are sealed in and all the remaining air is squeezed out. Whatever the case may be it is fact that the sound of silence is anything but quiet.

I tried my hardest to push out the deafening absence of sound and instead concentrate on the abyss that surrounded me. My breathing was slow, and measured. I counted each breath that I let escape my lungs in a frantic attempt to not allow myself to pass out. I curled my stiff fingers into fists in case I needed to defend myself (though I was certain that whatever I needed to fight off would not be phased by my fists). I focused my eyes the best that I could on the darkness and I could feel my pupils stretch in their attempt to draw in any light.

Then, as if my eyes had finally adjusted to the darkness, they began to appear. Pairs of wicked eyes came into focus all around me. Some were at level with me; others taller, still others were near ground level as if they belonged to some sort of animal. The deafening sound of the silence was replaced with the softer sounds of growls and light footsteps. The eyes were all piercing, all vigilant, and all equally terrifying.

Some of them were pale, almost white, orbs that reflected in them my scared face. Others were darker, deeper, and more sinister. Then there were the eyes I feared the most. They were the eyes at near ground level that shone the brightest, with their multicolored swirls of deep purples, blacks, and menacing reds. They belonged to Shifters. But these shifters, I knew, were nothing like Kora. They were not kind, nor gentle; they did not know how to control their power and not let it control them. These Shifters were purely animals who had shed any fragment of their humanity they may have held onto years ago. These Shifters killed for the sheer joy of killing and that was all.

And one of them looked more eager than the others. It was closing circle ahead of everyone else…

It would be the one to kill me

How does writing intrigue you? I have never slept very well. I make up stories while I stare into space. If they stick with me long enough I'll write them down. Writing has always been something I've enjoyed doing. It is an escape from the insomnia. Plus, I just love it. (If this application sounds weird, it's because of the insomnia, I swear!)
Why are you interested in Dream Poet?: I'd forgotten until last years NaNo how much I loved writing. Having a place to go where people would be supportive yet critical would be of great use to me. Maybe then I'll feel more comfortable sharing with people.
Piece and/or link: Here is a link to a writing sample I put in my journal awhile ago. My entries are normally friends locked, but I've unlocked this post for this purpose. There are three samples on this page- the third one is my favorite but it is longer than your 500 or less limit (~1300) so feel free to read one of the other two.

Genre(s) you write in (poetry/screenwriting/fiction/songwriting, etc: Mostly fiction. I used to try and write poetry but, well, to be frank, it wasn't very good.

How does writing intrigue you?: Writing gives me an outlet for the crazy things going round in my head! When work is getting me down I can sit in front of my laptop and write for hours.

Why are you interested in Dream Poet?: I like the idea of being able to chat to other people who enjoy writing as much as I do. Plus, it'll be a place to go when I need inspiration when writers block hits!

Piece and/or link: This is an excerpt from the first chapter of my story 'The Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum'

From afar the perfectly landscaped grounds, and the large red brick 6-storey Tudor mansion looked like it could be one of those prep schools that you see on television, or the home of some wealthy, reclusive widow.

But then you noticed the details: the bars on all the windows, the guards at the gates, the strange gloominess that seemed to emanate from the whole place. It was a sunny day, yet the sky surrounding the building seemed to lack color, the grass was a little less green, the flowers were a little less bright. Even the trees seemed to wilt in distaste at being trapped in the grounds of such a depressing place.

My parents didn’t seem to notice the extensions of misery, like tentacles, that spread from the looming building and contorted the surroundings in a rather poetic way. Maybe it was just me. I tended to look at the world a little differently to everyone else.

“Isn’t it pretty!” My mother’s voice was filled with the kind of enthusiasm she usually saved for when we went to church on Sundays, or when her mother-in-law was visiting. Her unwavering smile opposed my father’s stanch frown drastically and as she spoke his hands tightened on the steering wheel and his posture stiffened further.

“You don’t have to do this,” I murmured as we slowly approached the gates, “We can just turn around and go home. I promise I’ll be normal.” I knew it was useless. We’d been through all this after they’d dragged me to the car that morning, when I’d begged and screamed, sobbed and shouted against this injustice. I hadn’t known about their plan to ship me off to a psychiatric hospital half way across the country till it was happening.

“This is what is best for you,” My mom said, the ever-present smile still there, “Dr. Simon can help you, she’ll make you all better.”

Dr. Simon, what was so great about this Dr. Simon? Why did my parents all of a sudden put all their trust in her and her hospital? When had they planned this? How had they found out about this place? And why hadn’t I seen this coming?

The guards didn’t stop us at all when we got to the gates, we were sent right in and up the short, windy road to the hospital. It stood there ominously as we approached, like the haunted houses you see in films that you know the main characters shouldn’t enter, but they do anyways and all end up getting killed. The car came to a sudden halt outside of the foreboding double doors and my heart shuddered painfully in my chest. I was scared. Terrified actually. I knew implicitly that I was not crazy, that I didn’t belong in this place. I pulled my legs up and hugged my knees tightly as I tried to stop myself from crying.

And this is a link to my author page on fictionpress where I have 9 stories: http://www.fictionpress.com/u/609852/

How does writing intrigue you? I've always had a very active imagination and I love the fact that I can get them out on paper. I love how you can act through the characters, say what you can't say in real life, do what you can't do. It's like living vicariously.

Why are you interested in Dream Poet? Honestly, this comm sounds really amazing. I'm always nervous that my writing isn't good or that other people won't want to read it. That's why I have about 8 stories sitting around my laptop. I'm always looking for constructive criticism and I don't trust anyone I know personally to do that.

Piece:
If there’s one thing I’ve learned plenty about in the 30 years of my existence, it’s love and secrecy. Okay, so technically, that’s 2 things. But I believe they go hand in hand. When you love someone, you feel the need to protect them. And sometimes you must lie.

I ran a brush through my soft golden locks. Naturally, there were no tangles or knots. I kept my hair and body in the best condition possible so trivial human things like that would not hinder me. I gazed at my reflection in the mirror. My skin was unnaturally smooth and pale. Not a wrinkle in sight. There would never be a wrinkle on my face. Or anywhere else on my body. No frown lines, no laugh lines, no lines on my forehead, no stretch marks. There would never be an imperfection on my body.

There was a soft knock on the door and I rolled my eyes as I laid my brush down. I knew my “family” well enough by now to know that Edward was the only one stupid enough to bother me while in here. Emmett learned about my temper within a month of living here. Esme kept to herself most of the time, and Carlisle rarely got involved in our problems.

Genre(s) you write in (poetry/screenwriting/fiction/songwriting, etc: Poetry mostly, some fiction here and there, and a bit of songwriting.

How does writing intrigue you? Writing is basically essential to my sanity. It's an extremely healthy outlet for the most part, but...it's salvation to me. And without it, I don't know where I would be right now. It's the only way I feel able to communicate my emotions/messages/ideas clearly enough without having to be necessarily "clear" about them. I can say what I need to say about what I need to say in the way I need to say it. It makes me feel whole.
Why are you interested in Dream Poet?: I think it's a really awesome idea, just to get a comm together of people who share the same love/hobby of writing in whatever acceptable form. It's great.

"Nothing Compares To You"

Still Earth
The breeze that sweeps across the hills
Breathes no longer
Its whispering silence hushed
Like snowflakes falling in the night

Flower petals falling
Gently caress the ground
Their pleasant fragrance rising
In the air without a sound
Call the senses loudly

Softly now the waters sigh
Sinuous they flow
Within my hands it dwells not long
But gives cool refreshment like a song
Its harmony beckons, wild and free

See the horizon
Golden fire splitting the sky
Soft as a butterfly's wing
It lulls the world to reflection
And the mind to silent reverie

The stillness of twilight paints the sound
Of majestic brilliance in my eyes
Awakening a thousand desires
And filling my soul with dazzling surprise
Sheer amazement seizes me

But none of this compares
In any amount of measurement
To the breathtaking beauty I see
When I look at you,
Masterpiece of Creation

Resplendent visage delights my eyes
Each time I behold you
And what I feel when you are near
Is impossible to describe
Ambience undefined

The more I look the harder it is to see
Anything else that compares to your beauty
For there is nothing in all the world
That is more wonderful than you
I wouldn't tell you if it wasn't true

Like wild horses that ride into the sunset
You are indescribable
And as the trees lift their gilded arms to embrace the sky
So I wrap my arms up around your neck
And drink in your presence

And as the moon rises in the velvet sky
Like a pearl in the ocean
I melt in your arms
And in the still of the night I come to realize
You are the reason I am alive

Re: Dream Poets Rule the World!
that link doesn't seem to be working for me. I'm not sure if its just me or not, but you mentioned you took it down for re-editing, perhaps you provided a link to a deleted chapter?

dream poets rule the world
Name: Hallie
Genres: fiction, poems, sonnets, songs
How does writing intrigue you? It intrigues me because it allows me to escape my world and write someone elses; it lets me live in someone elses shoes and escape my problems and focus on their problems.
Why are you interested in Dream Poet?: I would like to see the reception my writing gets and if i need to improve. Fellow writers opinions are key.
Piece and/or link: It's a beginning excrept to a story called, Norah.

Life had never been kind or conscientious to Norah. Life always had some dull zest to it and nothing of that zest appealed to her. Norah had lived low key and never popped out of her ever-so-taut bubble which she locked herself in. She never let anyone in and often shut them out when they tried to get in. The only person who really knew her was her mother, Molly.

Love was also not very kind to Norah either. Having dated two guys that were both terrible to her during the relationship, it drove her away from even considering love anymore. Love was a dreaded word around her and she avoided any couples and romantic/chick flick movies because they all involved: love. She loved her family, and some of her friends but that was as far as her love extended. Well friends, family and her dog Coop.

Norah was a senior at East Hills High School in Washington State. The friends that she did have were close. Bernadette was her closest friend. They’d been best friends since they were five and in pre-school beating up on all the juvenile boys who verbally stated that she and Bernadette had coodies. Bernadette was happily in a relationship with her boyfriend of a year, Jeremy. Whenever Bernadette and Norah were together they talked about every topic possible other than love. The thing is that Norah gave the best advice best she’d pretty much experienced it all; the love, the heartbreak, the life, the pain, the emotions. Whenever Bernadette was having troubles with Jeremy or life—and I mean like crack out all the chocolate you can find, Ben & Jerry’s drinking, stomach-aching moments—in which Norah would help her. Without Bernadette in her life I don’t really think Norah would have an upbeat moment. She’d always be mopping around but her mother good always jolt her out of her ruts as well.

School was a mediocre subject when you talked to Norah about it. She excelled in English, history, business and German. Math and science are not her vises. She loathed them. Norah never really got why she had to learn them when she wanted to major in English and not math or science. Her junior and senior year, she spent the mornings at the local community college for running start where she studied arts and English. In the afternoon, she was at the high school where she took classes on science, English, and history. Life without a book is hell and life with high school is equally matched. High school and Norah never called it truce. It will always be a ongoing battle until she walks the line to receive her diploma.

How does writing intrigue you? I've been writing since I was young. I had my first poem published when I was 9 and it made me realise everyone was wrong. I was good. I enjoy writing because I feel free, I feel I can do anything, I can escape into my imagination and my mind is always over flowing with ideas. My life.. I have no control over really. But in my stories.. I have control.
Why are you interested in Dream Poet?: Someone recommended it and it seems like a decent place to be. To share my love of writing with who ever is reading and enjoy other peoples work.

That was an absolutely beautifully written song! I'm actually really jealous, right now. I've always wished I had the talent to write music. One day I'll learn to play the guitar or piano.... one day..

I approve!
